Forgotten girl on Ponte Sant’Angelo
This photo was taken in Rome the mid 1970s on the bridge by Castel San’t Angelo. I like this photograph as much today as I did then. It’s what I call a straight shot and I personally think it has stood the test of time.
The reason the photo came into being is that through my architecture professor I’d met an assistant to David Bailey who was working in Milan for Vogue. I met the girl at the same time, also through my architecture teacher. La professoressa kept an open house and she always had interesting people coming and going. There was a period that I spent most evenings there.
My plan was to show the photos from the session and somehow get a foot in the door and kickstart my career as a photographer. The optimism of youth!
Unfortunately I never saw the Vogue guy again to show him the photos. I went out with the girl a few times but have to confess that I have totally forgotten her name. Who knows if I would recognise her now after more than 35 years?
